Good News | Wanbangde Pharmaceutical Group’s Huperzine A for Treating Myasthenia Gravis Receives U.S. FDA Orphan Drug Designation!

Date:

15 Dec,2023

On December 13, 2023, Wanbangde Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. announced that it had received a letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (hereinafter referred to as "FDA"). The company's flagship product, acetylcholinesterase inhibitor [Huperzine A], has received FDA Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of myasthenia gravis.

An orphan drug, also known as a rare disease medicine, refers to a pharmaceutical product used for the prevention, treatment, or diagnosis of rare diseases. The Orphan Drug Designation was established by the FDA to encourage the development of therapies for rare conditions, offering a range of incentives to support new drug development. As such, obtaining this designation is critically important for advancing innovative drug research and innovation. Following the recent FDA Orphan Drug Designation granted to the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor huperzine A, the drug now stands poised to accelerate its path toward clinical trial applications and eventual market approval in the U.S. Additionally, the designation opens the door to valuable policy benefits, including but not limited to a 7-year period of market exclusivity after approval, priority review and approval for the New Drug Application (NDA), close guidance and support throughout clinical development, and waivers of application fees for new drug registration.

This FDA orphan drug designation for Huperzine A marks Wanbangde's first major milestone in its journey toward global expansion, and more importantly, it serves as a recognition of the company’s robust R&D capabilities—inspiring us to further pursue innovative research into new formulations and additional therapeutic applications for Huperzine A.

Regarding the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor [Huperzine A]

Huperzine A is a highly effective acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, indicated for benign memory impairments. It enhances patients' abilities in areas such as prospective memory, associative learning, image recall, recognition of meaningless figures, and autobiographical memory. Additionally, it has been shown to improve memory deficits caused by dementia or brain-organic lesions. It is also used in the treatment of myasthenia gravis. Due to its well-defined mechanism and excellent safety profile, Huperzine A has been extensively studied in clinical trials worldwide, covering indications such as Alzheimer's disease, mild to moderate traumatic brain injuries, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and other related conditions.

Wanbangde Pharmaceutical Group holds the approval number for Huperzine A API, making it a leading domestic supplier of this key active pharmaceutical ingredient. Additionally, its Huperzine A Injection is the only product of its kind nationwide, and its market sales are steadily expanding. Meanwhile, the company is collaborating with the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to develop a Class 2.2 new drug—Huperzine A Controlled-Release Tablets—which is currently undergoing Phase I clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
