Pharmacology and Toxicology:
Pharmacological Properties: Phloroglucinol and trimethylphloroglucinol exhibit antispasmodic effects on smooth muscles and provide anti-nociceptive action in visceral tissues, particularly effective in alleviating acute pain episodes. Phloroglucinol directly targets the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and urogenital system, making it a highly selective, non-atropine and non-papaverine pure smooth muscle spasmolytic agent. Compared to other smooth muscle relaxants, phloroglucinol stands out for its lack of anticholinergic activity; while relieving smooth muscle spasms, it does not trigger the array of anticholinergic side effects commonly associated with such drugs. Importantly, phloroglucinol does not cause hypotension, tachycardia, arrhythmias, or any other cardiovascular disturbances, indicating no adverse impact on cardiac and circulatory function. Animal pharmacological studies confirm that it selectively acts on spasmed smooth muscles, with minimal effects on normal, healthy tissues. Subacute toxicity and chronic long-term toxicity tests have demonstrated that phloroglucinol has no detrimental effects on animal growth, nor does it adversely influence the macroscopic or microscopic histology of vital organs, blood parameters, or biochemical indices. Furthermore, specialized toxicity studies reveal that phloroglucinol exhibits no teratogenic, mutagenic (carcinogenic), or genotoxic potential.
